Political Party Name Approval: ECI Guidelines and Rejection Risks
More applications are returned over the party name than over any other single item. The Election Commission applies a settled set of naming rules, and a name that fails them costs a founding group months.
The religious-name bar
The Commission does not register a party whose name carries a religious connotation, and the same principle extends to names implying that the party represents a single religious community. Names drawn from caste identity attract the same scrutiny.

Resemblance to registered and recognised parties
A proposed name must not be identical or phonetically similar to a name already on the register of political parties, nor to the name of a recognised national or state party. Similarity is assessed on sound and on the abbreviation, not only on spelling.
Abbreviations and regional-language forms
Register the abbreviation you intend to use on ballot material at the same time as the full name, and check that the transliterated regional-language form does not collide with an existing party in the states where you plan to contest.
Clearing a name before you file
Run the proposed name — and two fallbacks — against the Commission's published list of registered unrecognised political parties and the list of recognised parties, and against the abbreviation index. Adopting the name in the founders' resolution before this check is the mistake that forces a fresh resolution and a fresh thirty-day clock.
